ST. JOHN'S, Antigua (March 26, 2016) – Anguilla, Aruba, British Virgin Islands and St. Maarten lost again while Curacao and Bermuda rebounded on Match Day 3 of the Scotiabank CFU Men's Caribbean Cup.
St. Kitts and Nevis 2 - 0 Aruba
St. Kitts and Nevis kicked off their Group 1 campaign with a 2 - 0 victory away to Aruba. Harrison Panayiotou opened the scoring for the visitors by breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute of play. The Sugar Boys' second goal came just before the stroke of halftime, when Romaine Sawyers made it 2 - 0 in the 44th minute. The victory means Aruba are eliminated from the competition as Antigua and Barbuda will face St. Kitts and Nevis at home for the Group 1 deciding match.
Dominica 7 - 0 British Virgin Islands
Dominica put seven goals past the BVI at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds in Tortola with a brace from Kelrick Walters and a hattrick from Julian Wade. But it was an own goal from BVI's Ryan Dicker in the 20th minute that started the run of goals on the night. Walters got on the scoreboard in the 28th minute, followed quickly by Chad Bertrand in the 33rd. Wade scored his first in the 44th minute as the Nature Isle took a 4-0 lead into the break.
Dominica's prolific run continued on the other half of the break when Walters netted his second in the 51st minute. Wade found the back of the net in the 55th and 85th minutes to round out his hattrick and end the Group 7 match 7 - 0 in favour of Dominica.
Curacao 2 - 1 Dominican Republic
A tight Group 4 affair would see Curacao edge the Dominican Republic 2 - 1 at home. The win marked Curacao's first after an opening day defeat to Barbados.
After a goal-less first half, Gino Von Ressel grabbed Curacao's first goal of the tournament in the 66th minute. The Dominican Republic equalized in the 77th minute through Edipo Encarnacion. The match's winning goal came in the 81st minute from Felitciano Zschusschen, ending the match 2 - 1 in favour of Curacao.
Bermuda 2 - 1 French Guiana
Bermuda rebounded at home from their first-day defeat to Cuba with a 2 - 1 victory over French Guiana in Group 3. The visitors went ahead in the 36th minute through Rhudy Evens. However, Bermuda equalized minutes later with a strike from Wendell Ming in the 42nd minute, to go into the break 1 - 1. Reginald Thomson-Lambe scored Bermuda's winning goal in the 76th minute, ending the match 2 - 1. The result means French Guiana and Cuba both need 3 points to secure second round passage.
Sint Maarten 1 - 2 United States Virgin Islands
The USVI, who were playing away, got off the mark in the Caribbean Cup by claiming a 2 - 1 win over their northern Leeward Islands rivals St. Maarten in Group 2. The goal scorers for USVI were Ashanti Herring (24') and Trevor Wrensford (70'). St. Maarten's goal came from Ramsley Boelijn in the 89th minute. It was St. Maarten's second defeat, after losing their opener to Grenada in the Spice Isle.
Puerto Rico 4 - 0 Anguilla.
Puerto Rico opened their Caribbean Cup campaign with a 4 - 0 win over Anguilla at the Raymond E. Guishard Technical Center in Group 5. Juan Coca scored a brace (16' and 53'), and there were singles by Jorge Rivera (42') and Olvin Ortiz (62'). It was Anguilla's second defeat, having lost on opening day to Guyana.
Round 1 concludes on Tuesday, March 29, 2016.
