ST. JOHN'S, Antigua (March 29, 2016) - The final matches of Round 1 of the Scotiabank CFU Men's Caribbean Cup 2016 were played across seven venues in the region Tuesday night, with 15 nations, including St Vincent and the Grenadines which got a bye, now looking forward to the next round.
Dominica 1 - 4 Martinique
Dominica fell at home to neighboring Martinique in a 4-1 defeat. An own goal from Malcom Joseph gave Martinique the early lead in the 11th minute of play, followed by a strike from Deniel Herelle in the 23rd, ending the first half 2 -0. Martinique added a third goal in the 53rd minute with a conversion from Yoanne Arquin.
The home team pulled one back in the 74th minute from Chad Prince in the Group 7 match. But Martinique punctuated the score sheet with a fourth and final goal of the night, in the 88th minute, through Stephanie Abdoul. The third team in the grouping, British Virgin Islands, ended their 2016 Caribbean Cup run.
USVI 1 - 2 Grenada
Shane Rennie opened the scoring for Grenada in the 14th minute, ending the first half in favour of the visitors in the Group 2 game. USVI equalized in the 67th minute through Trevor Wrensford. As the match looked to go into extra time Grenada scored, in the 90th minute, with a strike from Kimo Sampson to give Grenada the 2-1 advantage. St. Maarten failed to progress.
Dominican Republic 2 - 0 Barbados
After an opening victory versus Curacao in Group 4, a visiting Barbados found themselves eliminated following a 2-0 defeat to the Dominican Republic on Tuesday. Baptista Darlyn had a second-half double strike, in the 50th and 57th minutes, to give the home team the goals needed to advance to the next round.
French Guiana 3 - 0 Cuba
French Guiana assured themselves qualification from Group 3 to the next round with a 3 -0 home victory over Cuba. Goals from Loic Baal in the 24th minute, Alex Eric 44th and Ray Contout's strike in the 64th minute ended the match 3 -0 in favour of the host, seeing Bermuda qualify to Round 2 as well.
St. Kitts and Nevis 1 - 0 Antigua and Barbuda
A lone goal from Harrison Panayiotou in the second half was the difference between Leeward Islands rivals St. Kitts and Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda at Warner Park on Tuesday. The victory saw St. Kitts and Nevis top Group 1 ahead of the Benna Boys. Aruba was eliminated.
Puerto Rico 0 - 1 Guyana
Solomon Austin's goal in the 65th minute gave Guyana's Golden Jaguars the edge over home team Puerto Rico. The victory enabled Guyana top Group 5 with six points, qualifying them to the next round alongside Puerto Rico. Anguilla was knocked out.
Suriname 3 - 2 Guadeloupe
A double from Stefano Russel (30' and 36') and another goal from Mitchell Kisoor in the 41st minute led Suriname to a 3-2 win over Guadeloupe. Claudio Beauvue (15') and Livio Nabad (32') scored for the visitors in the Group 6. The teams ended the two-team grouping with a win each.
