St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ senior men’s team, Vincy Heat, emerged winners of the five-team Windward Islands Football Association Men’s 2019 Championship, which was played at Victoria Park in St. Vincent.
The new-look Vincy Heat finished at the top of the table with 10 points amassed from three wins and a draw, one point ahead of second-placed Barbados.
Dominica and Grenada were third and fourth respectively, while St. Lucia, with three losses and a draw in their four matches, finished in the cellar position with one point.
Going into the contest, the Vincentian head coach, Kendale Mercury, said his team—which had several players making a senior-level debut—was seeking to shake a string of poor results and give the home crowd something to rally behind.
Striker Chavel Cunningham was named tournament MVP, and he also took home the trophy for most goals having scored four. Jadiel Chance, also from St. Vincent, was named best goalkeeper.
The country MVPs were Cunningham (SVG); Ackeel Applewhaite (Barbados); Briel Thomas (Dominica); Garth Thomas (Grenada); and Alvinus Myers (St. Lucia).
The tournament ran from February 28 to March 8.
