PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (May 1, 2016) - Central FC successfully defended their Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship title, defeating compatriots Direct TV W Connection 1-0 when both teams met in the final. The game, played in pouring rain, provided excitement for the crowd.
Central opened the scoring after slack defending from W Connection from a corner kick saw Marcus Joseph tap in a rebound in the 5th minute of play after Central's Julani Archibald made an initial save. Shandon Winchester, minutes later, had the chance to equalize but missed from close range.
Winchester was sent off for dangerous play inside Central's box just before the half. The 10-man W Connection, however, had another opportunity after a player was pulled down in the box, earning a penalty.
Unfortunately, defender Alvin Jones was unable to convert his penalty as Central's Javon Sample made the save, keeping the score 1-0 at the end of the first half.
The second half began at much slower pace as Central seemed content to make their number advantage count. But W connection showed great ball work and began to dominate possession. This coincided with Central showing heavy legs presumably from their previous extra-time encounter.
W Connection would, however, self-destruct as Jones was also sent off deep into the second half. Shortly after, Central added a second goal of the night when Jason Macono scored in the 83rd minute. Followed by Darren Mitchell who tapped in Sean De Silva's cross in the 93rd minute. The match ended 2-0, crowing Central FC repeat champions.
