CFU expresses solidarity with St. Lucia Football Association after death of under-20 female footballer

President of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), Gordon Derrick, has conveyed profound sorrow and regret to the leadership and football community of St. Lucia, following the passing of national Women’s Under-20 footballer Joella Fanus.

In a letter to the President of the St. Lucia Football Association, Lyndon Cooper, the CFU President noted that the loss is a tragedy not only to St. Lucia’s football but also to the youth of the country, for whom she was a positive example. “I grieve with you and feel your loss...as fragile as life is a void like this, created when one so young, so talented and with so much promise is removed from our sight is excruciatingly painful. However, I am confident in your ability to hold the team, the technical staff and the football fraternity together, to draw strength from her memory and inspiration from your experience with her.”

Nineteen year-old Joella started playing football from the age of fifteen, when she represented Amazons Soccer Club. Her persistence and skill attracted the attention of the country’s technical leadership and she was selected to represent St. Lucia as part of the current team
