It will be crunch time when Jamaica the only CFU team left in CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship takes on USA in the play-off spot for third place to the 2015 FIFA World Cup slated for Chile, in October. Both teams will meet on Sunday March 15, at the Estadio Francisco Morazan San Pedro Sula, Honduras starting at 6:00pm.
The young Reggae Boyz finished second in Group A with 10 points, the same as the USA, while Honduras ended on top with 11 points and earned the automatic berth to the FIFA World Cup. Five national teams from the Caribbean namely Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, Trinidad& Tobago and St Lucia entered the CONCACAF Championships which started on February 27, however only Jamaica have managed to survive the onslaught of the football kingpins from within the CONCACAF region.
The young Reggae Boyz after a shaky start losing 2-0 to hosts Honduras in their first game regrouped and have not lost another game since. They went on to clip the USA 1-0 in what could be described as their best victory earned since the start of the tournament.
The Jamaicans earned ten points (Guatemala 1 Jamaica 2, Cuba 1 Jamaica 1, Jamaica 5-Trinidad & Tobago1,and USA 0 Jamaica1) which was not enough to qualify for the World Cup but sufficient to give the team a place in the World Cup finals if they get by the USA this time. From the other four teams only the Haitians were able to secure a win beating St Lucia 4-1 but lost all the other games (Canada 3 Haiti 1, Panama 7 Haiti 1, Costa Rica 4 Haiti 1 and Mexico 2 Haiti 0).
Cuba drew three games (Cuba 1 Jamaica1, Cuba 1Guatemala1 and Honduras 1 Cuba 1). Trinidad & Tobago drew 2-2 with Cuba but lost to Guatemala 4-1, USA 2-0, Honduras 2-0 and Jamaica 5-1 while St Lucia lost all games Costa Rica 4 St Lucia 0, Mexico 6 St Lucia 0, Panama 6 St Lucia 2, Canada 5 St Lucia 1and Haiti 4 St Lucia 1.
